{"id":341,"date":"2010-03-14T00:52:06","date_gmt":"2010-03-14T00:52:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ravtrack.com\/GPStracking\/?p=341"},"modified":"2010-03-24T19:43:48","modified_gmt":"2010-03-24T19:43:48","slug":"setting-up-vpn-access-to-a-windows-xp-computer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ravtrack.com\/GPStracking\/setting-up-vpn-access-to-a-windows-xp-computer\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting Up VPN access to a Windows XP Computer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you are running your GPS tracking system using <em>RavTrack PC<\/em> on a Windows XP computer, you may want remote users to be able to access the tracked objects database from a remote computer that is not on your local netwrok.\u00a0 You may be able to do this using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection.<\/p>\n<p>This article describes how to setup VPN access to a Windows XP computer.\u00a0\u00a0 VPN access will allows you to\u00a0network two computers together, even if they are not on the same local network.\u00a0 It will work across the Internet, while still maintaining security and privacy.<\/p>\n<p>You will need Windows XP Professional with SP2 or SP3 installed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How to Configure\u00a0VPN\u00a0host on a Windows XP computer<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>From the Start menu, open the <strong><em>Windows Control Panel<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Double-click\u00a0the <strong><em>Network Connections<\/em><\/strong> item in Control Panel. A list of existing network connections will appear.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the <strong><em>&#8216;Create a new connection<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; item from the left-hand side of the window. The Windows XP New Connection Wizard will appear on the screen.<\/li>\n<li>First click Next to begin the new connection\u00a0wizard.<\/li>\n<li>Select <strong><em>Setup Advanced Connection<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; item from the list and click <strong><em>Next<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose the <strong><em>&#8216;Accept Incoming Connections<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; option and click <strong><em>Next<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the &#8216;<strong><em>Devices for Incoming Connections&#8217;<\/em><\/strong>, click <em><strong>Next<\/strong><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Choose an option on the &#8220;<strong><em>Allow Incoming Connections<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;and click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the &#8216;<strong><em>Users Permissions&#8217;<\/em><\/strong>page, select all of the users you would like to allow VPN access to this computer.\u00a0 Important: Every user that you wish to give VPN access, must have a Windows Login on both computers with the SAME login name and password.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the <strong><em>Next<\/em><\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong><em>Network Software<\/em><\/strong> page, select TCP\/IP and click on <strong><em>Properties<\/em><\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong><em>Incoming TCP\/IP Properties<\/em><\/strong> page, select Allow Callers to Access my Local Area if you want remote users to also access the LAN.<\/li>\n<li>Click on the option that determines how the remote computer will get its IP address for this VPN connection.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Make sure the IP scheme is the same as on your server.<\/li>\n<li>Click <em><strong>OK<\/strong><\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>If the VPN server is behind a router, Port Mapping will need to be done on the router. Standard port usage is port number 1723 for PPTP.\u00a0 You might also\u00a0have to configure your router for &#8216;PPTP Passthrough&#8217;.\u00a0 Port usage for IPSec is 500, 50-51.\u00a0 These ports will have to be forwarded to the VPN server&#8217;s IP.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Microsoft has excellent technical articles about setting up VPN networks <a title=\"VPN Information from Microsoft\" href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/network\/bb545442.aspx\">&lt;here&gt;<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/314076\">&lt;here&gt;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once you have VPN access configured to your <em>RavTrack PC<\/em>, you will need to connect to it from the remote client computer.\u00a0 The remote client computer will need to have a VPN connection created on it.\u00a0 Follow the steps below to create an VPN connection on the client computer.<\/p>\n<h3>Configure a VPN connection from a client computer<\/h3>\n<p>To set up a VPN connection on the client computer, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>On the computer that is running Windows XP, confirm that the connection to the Internet is correctly configured.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Start<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Control Panel<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In Control Panel, double-click on the <strong>Network Connections<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Create a new connection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On\u00a0the Network Connection Wizard, click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Connect to the network at my workplace<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Virtual Private Network connection<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If you are prompted to, do one of the following:\n<ul>\n<li>If you use a dial-up connection to connect to the Internet, click <strong>Automatically dial this initial connection<\/strong>, and then click your dial-up Internet connection from the list.<\/li>\n<li>If you use a full-time connection such as a cable modem, click <strong>Do not dial the initial connection<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Give the connection a descriptive name, and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Enter the\u00a0host name or the Internet Protocol (IP) address of the computer that you\u00a0wish to connect to, then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Anyone&#8217;s use<\/strong> if you want the connection to be available to anyone who logs on to the computer, or click <strong>My use only<\/strong> to make it available only when you log on to the computer, and then click <strong>Next<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Finish<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>If you are prompted to &#8216;connect&#8217;, click <strong>No<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Network Connections<\/strong> window, right-click the new connection you created.<\/li>\n<li>Click <strong>Properties<\/strong>, and then configure more options for the connection:\n<ul>\n<li>If you are connecting to a Windows domain, click the <strong>Options<\/strong> tab, and click to select the <strong>Include Windows logon domain<\/strong> check box to specify whether to request Windows logon domain information before trying to connect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>To use the new connection, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Use one of the following two methods:\n<ul>\n<li>Click <strong>Start<\/strong>, point to <strong>Connect To<\/strong>, and then click the new connection.<\/li>\n<li>If you added a network connection shortcut to the desktop, double-click the shortcut on the desktop.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>If you are not currently connected to the Internet, Windows offers to connect to the Internet.<\/li>\n<li>After your computer connects to the Internet, the VPN server prompts you for your user name and password.
